The Three Levels of The Human Mind

As humans, when we make a conscious effort to attend to our growth and development just as all creatures of the animal and plant kingdom, we will begin to recognize that humans have distinct mechanisms for their mental, emotional, spiritual and soul development. Just as caterpillars attend to their development to become butterflies or as seeds attend to their development to become trees, we humans have a divine plan for our development and that desire for growth differs from person to person.

Just as plants require soil, water, and light to grow, we humans require much the same and more. An essential ingredient for human growth is spiritual and divine warmth and light. This light is not so easily seen by the human eye because it flows into three levels that make up the human mind.

The First Level: Rational Mind

We are differentiated from animals by the inflow of spiritual light into all three levels of our minds; and beyond what animals can do, we can think analytically; we can see things that are true not only on the earthly level but on the spiritual level as well; and when we see them, we can acknowledge them and so be reformed and regenerated. Our ability to accept spiritual light depends on our ability to be rational.

The Second Level: Spiritual Mind

People have not realized before that there is another sun besides the sun of our physical world. This is because our spiritual nature has become so deeply involved in our physical nature that people do not know what the word “spiritual” means. So they do not realize that there is a spiritual world other than and different from this physical one, a world where angels and spirits live. Even though we have a physical body, we also have a spiritual body that is nourished by this spiritual sun and when the spiritual light from this sun flows into the second level of our mind-the spiritual mind, we are open to spiritual wisdom and can see how physical/material things correspond to spiritual things.

The spiritual sun releases warmth and light just like our physical sun; however, the light of the spiritual sun corresponds to wisdom, and its warmth corresponds to love. The ability to absorb spiritual warmth and light differs from person to person, and this is why people’s definition and perspective on love also differs.

The Third Level: Divine Mind

Divine warmth is love and can flow into a person to the extent that they are able to abstain from evil. Therefore, anyone can open their minds to understand divine wisdom, but their being/soul cannot be raised if they do not abstain from evil and turn towards divine love.

Anyone who has any sense at all and has not become inwardly convinced of false principles on the grounds of intellectual pride, on hearing people talk about higher things or on reading about them understands, retains them, and eventually affirms them if there is any desire for learning. This holds true for evil and good people alike. Even evil people who at heart deny divine gifts can also understand, discuss, and preach higher things, and can defend them in scholarly writing. However, when they are left on their own to think about them, their thinking is based on their hellish self-centeredness, and they deny them. We can see from this that our understanding can be in spiritual light even though our will may not be in spiritual warmth which is love itself.

From birth, when we are receptive to warmth and light or love and wisdom, the mind opens in a threefold pattern like a plant opening up. Spiritual light passes through the mind the way clear glass lets physical light through. However, without the warmth of that light, we cannot further develop the mind.

This is how we can be developed all the way to the third level in respect to our wisdom and love. The mind is not fully opened, until spiritual warmth, or the love of wisdom, is united to the spiritual light. It is through this union that a person becomes fully developed as an angelic soul.
